In his statement, Süren criticized the way the Animal Protection Law No. 5199 has been implemented, describing the enforcement as unacceptable. "From the very first day this regulation was enacted, horrific deaths of dogs have been reported in many municipalities. This law imposes a solution that is far from addressing the problem. While rational, sustainable, and scientific methods exist to solve this issue, rounding up animals and confining them to shelters or euthanizing them will never bring a lasting solution. Therefore, the most accurate and effective method is the 'Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release' principle," he said.
"The Circular is Contrary to Law No. 5199"
Süren pointed out that the February 10 circular sent to the 81 provincial governors is even contrary to the existing law, remarking, "Despite this, the public is being swayed against street animals through provocative broadcasts. Those unaware of how to coexist with animals and who resist this inclusion are inciting provocations against us-the advocates for the right to life-and municipalities. This situation is leading to societal polarization and chaos," he expressed.
Call to the Mayor of Didim
Reminding that Didim's Mayor Hatice Gencay has previously shown sensitivity towards street animals, Süren urged, "We expect a conscientious and humane stance from all municipalities against the 'collection and extermination' practice initiated based on this circular. We are particularly looking for this sensitivity and determination from Didim's Mayor Hatice Gencay and Director of Health Affairs Özdal Gündüz."
"Didim Is a Pet-Friendly City"
Highlighting that Didim is recognized as a pet-friendly city, Süren asserted, "No one should compare Didim with other places. Didim is and will remain a pet-friendly city. If any undesired situations occur at our Municipal Street Animal Treatment and Care Center, the people of Didim will show an unprecedented level of ownership and defense. Because when we say 'We Will Defend,' it's not just a slogan. It's a common struggle for everyone defending the right to life."
"At Any Cost, We Will Defend Life"
Süren concluded his statement saying, "At any cost, we will defend life against death. We call on all conscientious residents of Didim to protect and support the animals struggling for life on the streets."
